route 66 A bucket list travel experience Get your kicks on.... Main Street USA stablished in 1926, Route 66 was one of the United States’ first national highways for motor vehicles. Running east to west from Chicago (Illinois) to Los Angeles (California), the ‘Mother Road’ ran through eight states and served as the main route for westward migration. The highway soon became known as the “Main Street of America,” and its popularity skyrocketed when automobile traffic increased after World War II. Immortalised in the song “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”, recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946, the road became part of popular culture. Stretching 2,448 miles, crossing eight states and three time zones, Route 66 was one of the original US highways and played an integral role as the main route for migrants travelling west to California during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The highway was formally decommissioned in 1985, but the culture of the road and those who travelled on it persists today, thanks in large part to preservation efforts and the appeal of mid-century nostalgia. With sections of the road now protected and numerous landmarks, hotels, diners and signs preserved, experience the culture and diversity of this great nation on an epic ‘Bucket List’ road trip. Journey from the plains of the Midwest, through farmland, desert and mountain to the sun-kissed Californian coast. One of the most common questions asked is ‘how long does it take to drive Route 66’? The entire route between Chicago and Los Angeles can be completed in a little over two weeks and allows for detours to The Grand Canyon and glitzy Las Vegas but, for those with less time, the journey can be shortened by starting in Oklahoma City. Alternatively, if you wish to stay longer, extend your ‘once in a lifetime’ roadtrip by following coastal Highway 1 from LA to San Francisco along the ‘Big Sur’. E 66
