The island of Nevis is dominated by a long dormant conical volcano. Curiously, when the explorer, Christopher Columbus, sailed past the island he named it ‘Las Nieves’ after the spanish word for snow, presumably because the snow-white clouds hugging the peak reminded him of a snow-clad summit - hence the island’s modern derivation.
