The Marbella Club glitters with sunshine and history. It is here, in 1954, that Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg fell in love with a rustic beach paradise and the foundations of the Marbella Club Hotel were born. It has evolved substantially from its humble origins of a few rooms clustered about a patio to now include 115 rooms and suites and 15 individually designed 2-6 bedroom villas. It has been and still is a favourite haunt of the famous and is the shining light of the ‘Golden Mile’. Part of the enduring appeal must lie in the local charm that the resort exudes. Even though it is a fully serviced, international luxury resort with all the amenities you would associate like a dreamy spa & gym, superb kids club, delicious restaurants, and an impressive pool and yet it still retains a gentle sense of privacy - a place where you can go and totally switch off. The rambling nature of the place is quite reminiscent of a typical Andalusian village, perhaps quite not so sleepy though! Whatever, the laid-back ethos has been preserved as has the involvement of the founding family. In many ways the Marbella Club has perfected the art of family friendly hospitality. The Kids Club is located on the site of Prince Alfonso’s original family home and youngsters in particular will adore the extensive activities whilst parents with ‘smallies’ will bless the Peter Rabbit childcare services for taking the strain and leaving them to enjoy some well-earned downtime at the spa, on the water or just in a quiet corner under the warm, Mediterranean sun. Teenagers can pop across to sister hotel, Puente Romano, to indulge in a wide selection of active pursuits. All in all, everyone’s a winner at this wonderful club! Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc Oetker Collection, Côte D’Azur Possibly the most glamourous hotel in the Mediterranean Ever since the halcyon days of Napoleon III, the tip of Cap d’Antibes has been a glamorous retreat where the warm Riviera sun and magnificent blue Mediterranean vistas are only the beginning. From its exquisite perch on the Côte d’Azur, guests to the incomparable Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc have privileged access to the region’s many treasures including Antibes’ remarkable coastal path, St Paul de Vence and the beautiful Lérins Islands in front of Cannes. Within the confines of the property the sense of stylish escape affirms the special exclusivity that has attracted so many famous faces seeking a paparazzi-proof retreat. The elegant, belle epoque mansion sits hidden from view within a lush and extensive mantle of Mediterranean foliage with a ‘Grande Allée’ leading between the palm trees down to the waterside Eden Roc where the pool and restaurants are found in an ocean liner-like pavilion, which also accommodates some exclusive suites overlooking the water. It really embodies the most idyllic expression of the classic French Riviera. It was the setting for F Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night, the novel that defined the 'Roaring Riviera' lifestyle. There are 118 guestrooms including One Bedroom Suites, Deluxe One Bedroom Suites and the Eden Roc Suite, which can connect with a Junior Suite to form a vast apartment. Two private villas in the gardens complete the accommodation choices within the grounds, Villa Les Cèdres with two bedrooms and Villa Eleana with three. The hotel has recently acquired a third private residence, Villa Sainte-Anne. Located opposite the hotel’s grand gates, this is an entirely new, fully staffed villa of extraordinary charm with 5 bedrooms and its own swimming pool. Dining at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is a sublime experience. Eric Frechon – who has three Michelin stars at Oetker’s Le Bristol Paris – was brought in as chef consultant to “breathe new life into the gourmet menu”, working alongside executive chef Arnaud Pöette, a mainstay of the property since 1983, and new chef Sébastien Broda, who was formerly head chef at the Grand Hotel Cannes and earned a Michelin star at Le Jarrier in Biot, north of Antibes. Along with plentiful choices for water sports, tennis and soothing treatments at the Spa Eden-Roc by Prairie this iconic Mediterranean retreat will bring a bit of a-list glamour to those that want to live the dream! La Réserve Ramatuelle Near Saint-Tropez, Côte D’Azur Michel Reybier’s retreat is a winner on the Presqu’ile A few minutes from the fabled village of Saint-Tropez, but far from crowds and noise, is a place preserved from the hustle and bustle. A vast private domain nestled in the Provencal garrigue, lulled by the song of cicadas, and with a spectacular view of the endless sea, La Réserve Ramatuelle overlooks one of the most beautiful bays on the French Riviera. Despite its proximity to the rocking scene in St-Tropez, six miles away, this discreet little oasis feels a world away from the high-octane glitz. Its 23 spacious rooms and suites, all with terraces or private gardens, have spectacular sea views and are nestled into a ridge overlooking a secluded cove near the medieval hilltop village of Ramatuelle. The creation of Jean-Michel Wilmotte, one of the designers behind Doha’s Museum of Islamic Art, the hotel uses floor-to-ceiling windows and open balconies to capitalise on the region’s famed light. With natural stone in ochre and white and touches of unfinished wood, the undulating, interlocking structures create a modernist effect—a welcome change from the more classic and frumpy properties of the Côte d’Azur. And despite their simplicity, rooms are extremely comfortable, with plump white sofas positioned to let you gaze at the view. The sundeck hugs a 100-foot-long swimming pool, and there’s an indoor option in the spa for the cooler months. With understated but warm service and arguably the area’s best spa, La Réserve deserves an almost perfect score. Mediterranean Masterpieces 18
