V enice is quite simply the most beautiful antique in the world. An impressively preserved historical city of high Renaissance art and architecture in strictly controlled isolation in the middle of a sheltered lagoon. And herein lies its inherent modern flaw - daylight assault by hordes of daytrippers, but as the light fails the busloads will depart (with the remains of their packed lunch) and cruise passengers will re- embark for the next leg of their whistle-stop 7/10 night Mediterranean sea adventure. Now is the time to discover the Venice of the Venetians. What is for sure is that a principal motivation to spend some nights in Venice is for lovers and bon viveurs to drink at the well of love, life and libation for there is nowhere more romantic and if you are in the know you will also discover that Venetians are renowned for their delicious cuisine. This is not surprising since the city was built on the wealth of trade, which would naturally enrich the possibilities for the palette. Of course, fruits of the sea take precedent with dishes like bigoli in salsa (pasta in an anchovy sauce), risotto al nero di seppia (risotto cooked with cuttlefish ink) and sarde in saor (sardines preserved in a sweet and sour marinade) amongst the most famous dishes. Also very popular but seasonal are moeche , small green crabs fished
